Ors was bred by Tito Pontecorvo in Dubna, Russia; he is by a well-known stallion Osman
(Dagestan-Osanna) who was used extensively in Sweden at Karakum stud, out of an
Everdy-Teleke-line mare Sona. Ors has inherited strong characteristics of the Yulduz-
branch of the Gelishikli line, indeed his pronounced type bears an uncanny resemblance to
his illustrious great grandfather: classic lean, tubular, tucked-up body, powerful long walk,
sparse mane, light energetic athletic gaits with great impulsion. As a two-year-old, Ors was
exported from Russia to Texas, along with other Pontecorvo horses, where he was sold
and was used as a show-jumper. In 2006 he came to the UK but through a series of
circumstances was hardly ridden or turned out, until he came to us 8 months ago.
Since then he has made tremendous progress - a gradual transition from a nervous wreck
who clang to his stable, didn’t want to graze and bulged his eyes at sheep to spending the
day happily in his 4-acre paddock and being hacked out and schooled several times a
week. He is finally starting to put on weight and his narcolepsy attacks have almost
completely stopped. He is stabled next to a small foal whom he keeps in check but never
gets aggressive. He is content to be turned out on his own and will not fuss if left in his
stable when other horses go away but he can also be turned out and ridden in company.
Ors has fabulous, expressive paces, with powerful impulsion from behind and is
exceptionally light on the forehand. He is gaining fitness now and able to be hacked out for
2-3 hours carrying a rider of approximately 11 stones. He rarely displays a naughty streak
but he is not a novice ride. He can be extremely flighty and needs a confident, quiet rider,
with light hands and a secure seat. He has a soft mouth and will try to avoid contact unless
he trusts his rider. He has an exceptional jumping ability but we have only jumped him on
the lunge to avoid triggering off bad memories of being ridden too fast over jumps in
stronger-than-necessary bits. We have concentrated on slowing him down, getting him to
loosen and stretch and build up his back muscles. He has still some way to go but he has
responded very well to consistent training and a stable environment with 4 other Tekes on
the yard. He has been a very rewarding horse to look after.
Ors, who has been traumatised in the past by unsuitable care and a lack of opportunity to
form a strong bond with his handlers/riders, so important to so many Tekes, can still be
flighty, suspicious of his surroundings and lacking in confidence. He is looking for a
permanent home where he will be meticulously cared for by an understanding, calm person
who can appreciate his beautiful gaits and his kind, sensitive nature. He needs regular
turnout, daily grooming and structured exercise on the lunge and under saddle. He is not
suited to living out 24/7 and needs a relatively rich diet to keep his weight. He is currently
fed a traditional Teke diet of alfalfa and barley, with high-spec vitamins and minerals. He
has been ridden barefoot in the school and hacked out in Swiss Horse Boots. He is not
suitable for riding barefoot on hard ground. He has been checked by the vet, as one of his
hind legs tends to get slightly “filled” by the morning and confirmed to be sound. His back
has also been checked and confirmed to be 100% sound. Ors has no stable vices and is a
very “clean” horse.
Ors is suitable for long hacks and will probably be able to do endurance once he gets fitter
and gains some more weight. He can also be suitable for dressage and jumping but would
need a very skilled rider who can strike the right balance between authority and
understanding of Ors’s sometimes fragile temperament. He will not tolerate harsh
punishment and will bear a grudge for many days if told off too strongly, yet he needs a
constant reminder that he doesn’t need to be thinking for himself every minute of his life and
that he can put his trust in a human.
Ors is offered for sale or loan, and can stay in livery at the present yard. The guide price is
£3,500 with a large wardrobe, a basic Wintec saddle and a set of Swiss Horse Boots.
