                                       Studbook Registration

Akhal-Teke UK Ltd is a Breed Registration Service for the owners of Akhal-Teke horses
outside Russian Federation. Akhal-Teke UK Ltd is incorporated in the UK as a non-profit
company limited by guarantee. We work directly with VNIIK, the All-Russia Institute of
Horse Breeding in Ryazan, Russia, to assist horse owners with the process of General
Studbook registration, DNA testing and blood-typing and pedigree verification.

Akhal-Teke UK will advise breeders and owners on how to collect and where to send the
material for testing, and will work with VNIIK to verify the parentage of the horse and obtain
Primary Registration documents. We will also assist those owners who wish to inscribe their
breeding stock into the published volumes of the Studbook. Our Services are open to any
owner of Akhal-Teke outside the Russian Federation. The owner pays for the veterinarian to
collect blood and complete identification chart, for the laboratory testing and the cost of
VNIIK passport. The Akhal-Teke UK services are free.

       The British National Akhal-Teke Catalogue

Akhal-Teke UK maintains the National Catalogue of the Akhal-Teke horses resident in the
UK who are listed on this website. The catalogue is available on request in Microsoft Excel
format.

Passports and Breed Recognition in the UK

Akhal-Teke UK originally intended to obtain the status of PIO (Passport Issuing Organisation)
in the UK, by applying to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for UK
Breed Recognition for Akhal-Teke horses. Under the EU rules, breeds originating and having
their studbook outside the EU, are represented in their European country of residence by an
organisation which works in accordance with the rules of the "Mother" studbook.

In 2009 ATUK  submitted a detailed application to DEFRA in which we demonstrated amply
our compliance with the European Legislation on Breed Recognition, however, the application
was rejected on the grounds that we do not have a sufficient number of animals in the UK. We
went to appeal, however, at the moment, the whole Equine Identification system in the UK is
under review and it is possible that all existing PIOs will be replaced with a single Passport
Authority while breed societies will continue to maintain studbooks. If this happens, the status
of Akhal-Teke UK will be identical to that of any other organisation which registers horses of a
particular breed. As a result, we have withdrawn our appeal and are waiting for DEFRA to
issue the new guidelines.

Breed recognition does not affect Mother Studbook registration and the inscription of horses
into the National Register. We are also advising UK owners on the possible options with
regards to obtaining EU-valid passports for the Akhal-Teke. For detailed update
